This workshop is open to all skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, I’ll be there to answer any photography related questions. All you need is a camera and a tripod.

Short Days Mean Long Nights

Our days will be short, which means more time to see the Aurora! During the daylight hours (10am - 4pm), we’ll be sightseeing around interior Alaska taking in all the frozen beauty. I’ll take you to some of the most beautiful parts of the region; places I loved growing up, that I think you will too. There’s something special about the far north in winter, Life seems to stand still and the world gets quiet. You’ll experience it for yourself, then once the sun goes down we’ll grab dinner and go aurora chasing.

John’s Alaskan workshop was an absolute blast! It was adventurous but safe and John’s extensive knowledge of the area was an extra comfort. I met some new amazing people on this trip and took photos that I’ll cherish forever. Couldn’t recommend it enough!

The Hot Springs

We’ll soak in the aurora viewing experience at Chena Hot Springs Resort. This geothermal paradise is more than 50 miles from civilization, offering zero light pollution for some of the brightest Aurora and stargazing experience on the planet. Imagine swimming in their 5000 square foot hot spring, immersed in a warm bath while the Aurora dances overhead, it doesn’t get much better than this. Included in your workshop package is full access to the hot springs for the entire third day, dinner at the resorts restaurant and accommodations for the night.

Regardless of why you do photography, John delivers a fantastic workshop experience suited for anyone who has a passion for the art. You’ll experience amazing sights and adventures, tons of laughs and smiles, and you won’t regret the experience!

Lodging

Included in your workshop package are accommodations for each night. The first two nights will be spent at the beautiful Black Rapids Lodge in the heart of the Eastern Alaska Range. This timber framed masterpiece is situated in one of the most beautiful, remote and pristine wilderness in the world. Surrounded by gorgeous scenery, this is an Alaskan experience you’ll remember forever.

This workshop was honestly one of the best trips I’ve ever done! I got to see the northern lights and I met some incredible people! John was an awesome guide and took great care of us! If you’re thinking about going, DO IT!

The Lodge has enough rooms to accommodate our whole group, and each one is cozy and inviting. You’ll have your own bed, full bathroom, beautiful view, and even access to high speed internet.

You’ll be served incredible food cooked by their in-house chef for the duration of your stay. Each meal will be enjoyed with great company and beautiful views.

If we’re lucky, the lodge owner Annie might even sing for us!

The Ice Caves

On the second day of our stay at the lodge, we’ll make the quick excursion down the Richardson Highway to Castner glacier, which is home to an incredible ice cave. We’ll snowshoe to this amazing spot, capturing the scenery along the way. You’ll get to stand inside this massive natural structure as the Aurora dances overhead.
